Microsoft is dominating the smaller-scale virtualization projects with SMB3, which may seem nice until you see the price. Basically, it costs as much to configure an SMB3-based virtual storage, as a high-end physical SAN or NAS would. Besides, even on the smallest scale, there are more requirements, which lead to higher expense, i.e. additional Windows Server licenses, etc. That’s without taking into account the SAS JBODS required for such a system. StarWind’s main priority is reducing CapEx and OpEx without any loss in performance, so that’s what StarWind Virtual SAN will do.
