PROBLEM
Prior to implementing StarWind HCI Appliance (HCA), TrendHR utilized DataON Cluster-in-a-Box (CiB) appliance virtualized on Microsoft Hyper-V. However, the DataOn solution was reaching the end of life and support. New offerings from DataOn were focused on its HCA integration with Microsoft Azure which added significant cost on top of the hardware. The company was not sold on this offering and started exploring other options. The TrueNas solution turned out to be cost-intensive in terms of a high availability (HA) server and the number of nodes. StarWind became the best fit for the company as HCA was significantly less initial investment and had more redundancy in the storage solution even at the lower price point.
SOLUTION
TrendHR has chosen StarWind HCA as it offered a lower total cost of ownership (TCO) and upfront investment as well as an affordable storage solution that met the IT infrastructure performance needs. So far StarWind HCA more than meets the company’s on-premises hosting requirements and allows flexibility for growth in many ways and full HA on a budget. TrendHR was able to avoid having to invest in additional expensive network switches for its storage network by staying with a 2-node solution, which can be expanded to 3 nodes without the need for investing in the storage network infrastructure as well. For an SMB, the cost of the network infrastructure would be a significant portion of its budget, so StarWind HCA allows the company to invest more in the storage and compute resources by holding off on those network expenses until they are truly required. Besides, the StarWind solution was about $16,000 less than the next comparable solution. TrendHR has been so pleased with its experience with StarWind and hopes to continue to partner with it for future projects. As the company’s storage and computing needs grow, it will gladly reach out for the StarWind solutions first.
