From SMBs to Enterprise Level, iSCSI SAN makes sound business sense

iSCSI allows any IT administrator to easily deploy a true SAN over an IP network using standard Ethernet switches. There's no need to learn the more complex skills required for Fibre Channel (FC) storage and your total storage costs are reduced since there's no FC switches or cabling to buy. That means virtually any company can benefit from StarWind iSCSI SAN:

  • Companies with limited IT budgets and resources - Even the smallest companies can realize a positive ROI when using iSCSI storage to backup straight to disk before going to tape. You'll essentially retain weeks or even months of backups for protection against data loss and for legal/compliancy requirements as you reduce your dependency on backup tape.
  • Expanding SMBs - iSCSI SAN is ideal anywhere remote data replication or disaster recovery is a requirement such as a new office being opened or a new company being acquired in another state. The costs associated with traditional data protection such as tape off-siting and data center hosting costs can be significantly reduced by leveraging remote sites and iSCSI.
  • Hosting organizations - Organizations that host other people's data such as Application Service Providers (ASPs), Internet Service Providers (ISPs) or Storage Service Providers (SSPs) can all benefit from a reduced TCO footprint when using iSCSI storage.
  • Enterprise applications - Companies that require high transactional, enterprise performance can scale iSCSI solutions up to 10GigE, thus expanding iSCSI Storage Network performance to equal that of Metro and Wide Area Networks.
  • Mixed storage environments - For organizations already invested in FC as primary storage, using iSCSI for the lower cost tiers will provide significant cost savings over FC. It's a growing trend within the industry to implement iSCSI storage in mixed protocol environments, where existing FC storage may be legacy but still under warranty, or the performance of FC is required for extremely I/O intensive applications such as high transactional databases with many hits per second. iSCSI is also the ideal choice for many applications from Microsoft Exchange, SQL Server to VMware or Hyper-V.
