VSS - Microsoft VSS (Volume Shadow Copy Service)

Microsoft VSS (Volume Shadow Copy Service) is a service that runs Microsoft Windows Server operating systems and allows the creation of instant snapshotsof disk volumes. VSS support in StarWind allows full compatibility for snapshots and volume copies when running Microsoft Windows Server operation systems.

VSS solves open file issues when creating a snapshot or volume copy. Since applications may have open files that are not committed to disk, selecting a time in which all processes will be completed to perform a snapshot or copy is practically impossible. The VSS Service solves this problem by "freezing" the operation of applications for a short time. If necessary, applications store temporary data to disk, allowing data to be copied without incurring issues with open files and lost data. The process of obtaining a VSS enabled snapshot or copy has minimal impact on system performance and does not entail significant delays in the operation of the application.

The mechanism of getting a snapshot is called a provider. There can be systemic, software and hardware VSS providers. Systemic and software providers make a disk image on the client side and are implemented either at the level of the operating system (such as a standard component of Microsoft Windows Server 2003/2008) or as a separate application, intercepting I/O functions. In the case of hardware providers snapshot creation is performed by the storage controller or RAID-array.

StarWind iSCSI SAN fully supports Microsoft VSS for fail-save snapshots and volume copies.
