IPSec Tunneling
IPSec (IP Security) is a set of protocols providing encryption and authentication of IP-packets. IPSec allows secure IP connections. In contrast to common protocols SSL and TTL implemented at the transport layer (fourth layer of the OSI model), IPSec operates at the network (third) layer. IPSec is transparent to the network and applications, providing low-level data security.
There are two modes of IPSec: transport and tunneling. In transport mode only the data part of the IP-packet is encrypted, with the header containing the data for routing remaining open.
Tunneling mode encrypts the IP-packet completely, including the address fields. For transfer on an external network the encrypted IP-packet is included in another IP-packet, which contains no information about the real sender and recipient, but only firewall addresses. Thus, you can organize a completely secure tunnel connection between two computers (i.e. server and SAN or SAN to SAN for replication) or segments of a virtual local area network using open communication channels.
