StarWind Virtual Storage Appliance (Preview)

These days, IT infrastructure virtualization is shifting from an innovative technology to a common thing for most businesses. And there are certain reasons for that: simple management, lower hardware footprint, and cost efficiency. Taking the constantly high demand for virtualization platforms into account, finding a hypervisor vendor is not a problem, and VMware seems to hit the top of the list. However, certain difficulties arise when VMware users start choosing among various Software-Defined Storage (SDS) solutions. To meet the needs of our customers running VMware vSphere infrastructures in a shared storage solution, we offer the Linux-based StarWind Virtual Storage Appliance.

Problem

Although there is a variety of options for choosing a shared storage solution, VMware vSphere users typically face several barriers on their way. The first pitfall is a limited hardware choice because of a strict hardware compatibility list (HCL) you have to conform with when deciding on an SDS solution. Next, typical SDS solutions require special skills and lots of time of a system administrator to be properly deployed. Moreover, most vsan solutions create a large hardware footprint, requiring an external Witness node to build a 2-node highly available vSphere cluster. The last but not the least comes the problem of additional Windows licensing costs for VMware users willing to deploy StarWind Virtual SAN as it is a Windows-native solution.

Solution

To overcome these pitfalls and provide VMware vSphere users with a hardware-agnostic, easy-to-deploy Software-Defined Storage solution with a minimalistic node configuration, StarWind offers the Linux-based Virtual Storage Appliance (VSA). VMware users can now build their IT infrastructure with hardware that perfectly fits their needs since StarWind VSA is completely hardware-agnostic. Minimum time spent on the deployment process – StarWind VSA goes as a Linux-based virtual machine with StarWind Virtual SAN installed and configured. Minimalistic hardware footprint ensured since there is no more need in external witness nodes for building a highly available 2-node VMware vSphere cluster. And finally, no Windows license required as StarWind VSA is a Linux-based solution.

Conclusion

StarWind Virtual Storage Appliance becomes a perfect solution for VMware vSphere users who are willing to easily deploy a hardware-agnostic SDS solution with a truly minimalistic setup. Coming as a Linux-based virtual machine with StarWind Virtual SAN already installed and configure, StarWind VSA provides its top-notch features without having to get a Windows license when it’s unnecessary.
