Introduction

ZFS

The IT world develops extremely fast and the amount of data stored on storage arrays, as well as its value, increases exponentially. The traditional way of solving capacity and redundancy requirements is to pour money into the storage infrastructure. That is something that can be hardly achieved with commodity off-the-shelf hardware, so enterprise-grade storage arrays are kicked into the game, providing the ability to store large amounts of data while keeping it safe at the same time. This, however, is not the most suitable solution for SMB and ROBO scenarios due to its high implementation expenses and high total cost of ownership (TCO).

Problem

SMB & ROBO Need to Store Unprecedented Amounts of Data

Processing and storing large amounts of data is not the prerogative of only large enterprises anymore. In fact, a lot of SMBs and ROBOs require storing huge amounts of data while still securing their maximum safety. Therefore, to ensure data availability, the storage system needs to operate 24/7/365 even if one of the nodes or any of the node components fails. Additionally, such systems must provide protection against local drive failures to keep maximum uptime. And finally, data integrity must be ensured across the entire system. As a result, businesses need an enterprise-grade storage array at SMB cost that provides a file system capable of storing huge amounts of data, which is reliably protected from data corruption and remains highly available.

Solution

StarWind Coupled with ZFS:
Enterprise-Grade Storage System at SMB Cost

To provide organizations with an enterprise-grade storage system that is capable of delivering high availability, local redundancy, and data integrity (all at SMB cost), StarWind offers integration with an enterprise-level filesystem —ZFS. Within its VSA (Virtual Storage Appliance), StarWind combines the ZFS on Linux benefits with its native all-nodes active-active replication and all-cluster components health monitoring.

The integration with ZFS allows ensuring local redundancy with RAIDZ on various levels (mirroring, Z1/2/3). Additionally, every byte is protected against silent data corruption since ZFS is doing integrity checks for both data and metadata. Furthermore, disk scrubbing operations can be scheduled to eliminate any potential bit rot errors.

ZFS can also support up to 256 trillion yobibytes (2^128 bytes) of storage capacity, making it easily scalable to meet any future growth demands. With this in mind, data is protected on every layer of a StarWind-based cluster, while StarWind continues to constantly monitor the health state of each cluster node, every disk, and the file system itself.

Conclusion

StarWind and ZFS Ensure Maximum Data Integrity and Flexible Growth

By combining StarWind and Linux ZFS inside of a VM, we provide organizations with an enterprise-grade storage system at an SMB cost. This combination increases data protection, provides maximum uptime figures, and eliminates the possibility of data corruption. At the same time, such a system is always prepared for any future storage growth demands.

Success Stories

We are satisfied with StarWind. The support is really fantastic. Whenever any issue arises, the response is very prompt, and solution is immediate.

Srinivas Kouda, Company’s Representative

We were able to build 2-node storage clusters based on virtualization in 19 hypermarkets without any problems and with high cost-efficiency.

Vass Sandor, IT Infrastructure Leader

By being able to virtualize our environment with StarWind, we were able to retire some old hardware, get our services highly available, reduce power consumption and heat in our server closet.

David Gardner, Information Systems Manager

StarWind got us off the clustered environment, which was a big help. So, I could regain control of my storage and reclaim and redistribute the space we desperately needed.

Ryan Fulton, Company’s Representative

Price + Simplicity. StarWind vSAN offers great pricing and allows us to get work done without expensive custom hardware. It also makes getting back online quick and easy after an outage or hardware failure.

Aaron Hayes, IT Manager

We chose StarWind Mainly because of the cost compared to other vendors. Simplicity of setup was also a major factor and I like the fact that you don’t need a vendor certified engineer to perform the installation.

John Harris, Windows System Administrator,
Department of Physics, University of Oxford

Because of recommendations of older colleagues, with StarWind, we got a reliable storage with no additional hardware. There was a need to increase IT infrastructure performance and we saw StarWind as the most cost-effective solution.

Željko Medić, Director of IT Department

StarWind is the best storage product I have ever used! It satisfies and exceeds requirements.

Joe Gursky, Director of IT
