StarWind Cloud VTL for AWS and Veeam Installation and Configuration Guidance

Published: May 2017

StarWind Virtual Tape Library is a feature of StarWind Virtual SAN eliminating the need for physical tapes by emulating industry-standard tape hardware and keeping all data on inexpensive, fast and high-capacity spinning disks. It increases the speed of the backup process, allowing it to fit the backup window without overlapping with production time.

This guide describes how to deploy StarWind Cloud VTL and configure the replication with Amazon Web Services.

The main components are StarWind Cloud VTL and Veeam Backup & Replication Server which can be deployed in a different manner, according to specific infrastructure requirements.

The first step is to download, install and register the software. For this, the downloaded setup file must be launched on the server where StarWind Cloud VTL will be installed and appropriate installation settings selected.

Next step is to configure Virtual Tape Library. Here, the StarWind Management Console must be launched, the default storage pool configured and the StarWind server selected. After this, the Virtual Tape Library location must be specified and the device model selected. Afterward, the tape must be created and the number of tapes, tape type, and other parameters specified.

The third step is to get Access key ID and Secret access key in AWS using the AWS Management Console.

Next step is Creating Amazon S3 Bucket. Here, Storage and S3 must be selected and appropriate bucket name and the region provided.

After this, replication must be configured between StarWind and AWS. For this, the VTL device must be opened and Cloud Replication selected. In the Replication Settings, Access Key ID, Secret access key, Region and Bucket Name must be specified and tape file retention settings chosen.

Next step is mounting VTL on the backup host. To pass-through the VTL device to the Veeam Backup and Replication Server, the corresponding VTL iSCSI target must be mounted. After this, tape library drivers should be installed.

Next step is to add StarWind VTL device to Veeam Backup & Replication Tape Infrastructure. After this, “File to Tape” job with the automatic offload to Amazon S3 must be configured.

The final step is to restore previously backed up tapes from Amazon S3.
