CHALLENGE

Before deploying StarWind Virtual SAN (VSAN), Ascent, LLC relied on two standalone physical servers, running Windows Server 2022 with no high availability (HA). When one server needed maintenance or had an issue, workloads had to be manually moved to the secondary node. Any servicing required planning an outage window, which disrupted operations and added stress to routine maintenance.

The main concern was uptime, and the existing setup could not provide seamless failover. Alternatives like VMware vSAN and Proxmox with Ceph were evaluated, but they were harder to deploy, more expensive, or required more hardware nodes. Ascent needed a reliable, simple, and cost-effective way to achieve HA with just two servers.

StarWind VSAN provides high availability with seamless failover and simplifies maintenance, as I can now live migrate workloads to the other node while servicing the hypervisors.

SOLUTION

Ascent, LLC chose StarWind VSAN because it allowed the creation of an HA cluster. The solution enabled automatic and seamless failover, removing the need for manual workload shifting. Maintenance became much easier, as workloads could now be live migrated to the other node without scheduling outages.
StarWind delivered the required HA using only two nodes, unlike Ceph-based setups that need three or more. The deployment was quick and smooth thanks to StarWind’s professional services and responsive support team. The new infrastructure now meets all uptime and performance requirements and reduces maintenance labor.
Ascent, LLC also plans to reuse this setup as a turnkey model for future two-node HA projects.
