Milchwerk Jäger GmbH saves $1.5–2 million annually on its IT costs by deploying a hyperconverged infrastructure around StarWind HCI Appliance (HCA)
CHALLENGE
Before implementing StarWind Virtual SAN (VSAN) and later StarWind HCI Appliance (HCA), Milchwerk Jäger GmbH operated its IT infrastructure on standalone Windows Servers with Hyper-V, relying on Microsoft’s built-in replication for important VMs and using Synology SHA clusters for high availability (HA). However, performance degradation issues due to an unresolved iSCSI bug made the Synology storage unfit for handling more than four VMs.
The subsequent shift to IBM Storwize V3700 with SAS interfaces improved performance but posed limitations – it required both nodes to be physically close. These constraints made the infrastructure difficult to maintain in the long run.
StarWind showed us the best possible configuration and tweaked our existing system a lot. Every future system that we build or buy either runs with StarWind software or is part of their StarWind HCI Appliance lineup.

SOLUTION
StarWind offered a game-changing solution with its VSAN and HCI Appliance. Milchwerk Jäger GmbH first tested StarWind VSAN using a personal 3- month trial license, later seamlessly transitioning to a full license without any downtime. StarWind’s team assisted with optimal configuration and finetuning.
The iSCSI performance bottlenecks were eliminated thanks to StarWind’s unique multipath configuration combining loopback and dedicated NICs. With everything operating over Ethernet, the nodes could finally be separated into different buildings. The resulting infrastructure met all operational requirements while drastically reducing yearly IT costs.
