Introduction

If you are an information technology administrator, then by now, you would have known that Microsoft released Cumulative Update 10 for Exchange Server 2016. This update takes Exchange Server 2016 on version number 15.01.1531.003. These latest updates are available now on the download center. These new updates have addressed many issues of the previous versions which range from issues related to security or quality reported by the customers to updates in functionalities. This Exchange Server update also comes with important changes to installation prerequisites.  In today’s post, we will talk about the updated prerequisites, details about this version and how to install the update. So, without any more delay, let us start.

Cumulative Update 10 of Exchange Server 2016

General Details: This update resolves many issues of the initial Exchange Server release. The file name of this version is ExchangeServer2016-x64-cu10.iso and it was published on June 12, 2018. The total size of this file is 5.6 GB. It supports the following Windows operating systems:

1.Windows 8.1

2. Windows Server 2012

3. Windows Server 2012 R2

4. Windows Server 2016

Updates to Pre-Requisites:

The latest update has many modifications made to its prerequisites for the installation process. The two update affected prerequisites are given below:

1. NET Framework Version 4.7.1: The .NET Framework 4.7.1 is required for the installation of this latest update. In the cumulative update’s installation setup, a user is forced to install this version of .NET or else they will not be able to proceed with the Exchange setup.

2. VC++ 2013 runtime library: The VC++ 2013 runtime library is a must-installed requirement on the server for these cumulative Exchange Server updates. It is crucial to have this library installed as it will make available the security updates of Exchange Server’s third-party component. This third party component is very useful as it provides Exchange Server with features such as WebReady Document Viewing and Data Loss Prevention. The installation of this prerequisite is also enforced by the Exchange setup before the application of the cumulative update.

It has been declared that all future security-related updates will force the runtime package’s installation in every Exchange Server version if they are missing. Customers who opt for Windows Update for patching or updating their servers will also need to pre-install the runtime package before launching Windows Update.

Installation Guide for Cumulative Update: For the installation of this cumulative updates you need to use the following steps.

Step 1: Take backups of your servers. It is better to be careful than sorry.

Step 2: Disable your Exchange Server’s security software.

Step 3: Click on the button with the ‘Download’ label in order to download the update setup. There are two ways to download it. In the first method, you can automatically start the installation by selecting Open or Run from its current location. In the second method, select Save if you want to install the update later.

Step 4: Follow the Exchange Setup instructions.

Step 5: Enable your security software once the installation is complete.

Important Guidelines:

Microsoft has always recommended testing of all their product updates before their actual deployment. This helps in avoiding issues such as unforeseen incompatibilities, errors and downtime, etc.  Also, keep your Windows PowerShell Script Execution Policy to Unrestricted mode during installation to avoid any unnecessary issues. You can check the policy on the machine that requires an upgrade from Get-ExecutionPolicy cmdlet command on Windows PowerShell.

Customers that have deployed their Exchange with either the hybrid model (i.e. it is present on both the cloud and on-premises) or are using a combination of both on-premises Exchange and Exchange Online Archiving; are required to update their Exchange Servers with these cumulative updates.

Conclusion

So, this was our take on the latest Cumulative Update 10 of Exchange Server 2016 which is quite easy to implement if the required steps are followed. You can download this update from the link mentioned here.
