Re: Random suggestions and feedback for 5.7

Just responding to David about the delayed start thing... Firstly, what I'm saying here is opinion, not fact - I could be very wrong! Starwind runs on top of Windows and thus has dependencies on other Windows services. These in turn have dependencies on other services. And Windows is a moving target...

Re: Mirror/Replication Disk Bridge

As you're talking about the free edition - what version number is this - 5.7? And is the full version of 5.7 being released at the same time?

cheers,

Aitor

Re: Raid 0 with Starwind HA?

Hi nbarsotti, I didn't realise you were talking about SSDs. X25-M has been pretty good in my experience and if you are keeping loads of spare area - either by just not having that many writes, or by over provisioning, then you should be fine. Of course an SSD can fail for reasons other than write en...

Re: Raid 0 with Starwind HA?

Simplistic risk calulation... I am not very good at maths so please someone jump in and correct this if I make a mistake. RAID0 probability of failure = number of drives x probability of single drive failure Then Starwind HA is effectively RAID1 which reduces your risk. Effectively you have RAID 0 +...

Re: Some feature requests

Hixont: I hope your domain admins don't read this forum! The big question is: do you trust them with your entire network infrastructure? So many things depend on Active Directory that really you shouldn't have incompetent or malicious people in charge of it... Anyway, your problem could be solved if...

Re: Starwind iSCSI vs Microsoft NFS

Hi David, Re the drive letter issue: In Windows, you can mount a volume as a folder on another drive, so running out of drive letters isn't an issue. E.g. you could have three drives mounted as folders in D:\ ... D:\drive1\image1.img D:\drive2\image2.img D:\drive3\image3.img This does create a depen...

Re: Starwind iSCSI vs Microsoft NFS

Hi David, Thanks for the tip about 16.1 - I will have to try again. I don't know what Intel's drivers are like for ESX. Perhaps they actually lock down the settings, or expose them only in config files or something. A lot of them are probably Windows specific anyway. So you've gone to the new LSI 92...

Re: Free version

<opnion> Microsoft have finally reversed their brain-dead decision on only allowing their iSCSI target on OEM supplied Windows Storage Server, which you had to buy with hardware. It's now a free add-on to all editions of Windows Server 2008 R2. There are no license restrictions - you can use it an a...

Re: Starwind iSCSI vs Microsoft NFS

Hi, Bohdan - your ATTO results look like you're running both NFS and Starwind over 1G, not 10G? As they max out around 100MB/sec, yet your drives are capable of 125 - 130MB/sec. With 10G, and the cache levels you are giving Starwind, I get much better results; in fact with an ATTO test that fits int...

Re: VM Performance during full sync

Just out of interest can you give me an example of the kind of hardware you would need to have in place currently (on 5.6) for one VM to be accessible during a full sync of the image it resides on? You need to throttle down the bandwidth on the sync network. There's several ways to do this. If you ...

Re: Windows 2008 R2 SP1

Ended up having to do a full sync because the allowed change rate % is so small for fast sync that my VM's exceeded it. Hi Camealy, do you mind me asking how big your HA targets are, and how full they are? I managed to get away with a fast sync after at least 48 hours of a node being down; I'm curr...

Re: Windows 2008 R2 SP1

I'm running 2008 R2 SP1 on all my hyper-v cluster nodes, and on the physical boxes that run Starwind (I run Starwind virtualised). I have NOT installed SP1 on the Starwind VMs, as I could see no advantages to doing so (apart from the hyper-v features like dynamic memory, SP1 is effectively a hotfix ...

Re: Starwind on Active Directory

That's quite funny! I guess then the answer to 1) and 2) is yes you can if you really want to - at least we agree on that! The reason why I say keep AD and SAN on seperate Windows instances is from experience... Both pieces tend to be mission critical to a network, so you really don't want to be doi...

Re: Starwind on Active Directory

1) You really shouldn't do this - it's nearly always best to keep AD servers as dedicated for that purpopse and that purpose only. Sure, it's possible to combine AD with other roles (and in MS Small Business Server - which is IMHO a great product - it's combined with Exchange!) but think about it - ...

Re: Discovered HA issue in version 5.5 final release

Hi sls, I don't know why you are getting the problem you are seeing, but it doesn't reflect my experience at all. I tested 5.5 (and betas of 5.5) extensively and am now in production with multiple hyper-v VMs running off multiple CSVs on multiple Starwind HA targets. Part of my testing involved a co...
