Re: Using removeable devices for Windows Server backup rotation

I don't think you can do that from the Starwind side. However I have a couple of suggestions... You could look at scripting the initiator, but run the scheduled task from the starwind box, maybe even trigger the backups from the starwind box too. If everything is in the same Windows domain this shou...

Re: Looking for some peer support (5.6 performance problem)

By the way, crossover cables are unnecessary even with 1GbE. You can use normal cables for NIC<->NIC, NIC<->switch and switch<->switch. With 10GbE, your main choice will be conectors. With a peer-to-peer connection, obvioulsy you want both servers to have NICs with the same connector type - and you ...

Re: How do you configure seperate network for ISCSI

You mean Starport? Sorry, I have no experience of using it (except that some Starwind - to - Starwind functions have depended on it). I've only ever used Microsoft failover clusters as clients for Starwind (kind of the reason why I needed a SAN in the first place), and Microsoft only support their o...

Re: XenDesktops and Deduplication

During the 5.8 beta I did an experiment with good performance results, and that was before 5.8 had been fully performance optimised. I was using one pair of 5.8 installs as a "traditional" starwind HA target. These were storing their .IMG's on iSCSI targets which were other instances of 5....

Re: How do you configure seperate network for ISCSI

1) give the nics ip addresses on a different network. E.g. your main network is 192.168.1.0 with a subnet mask of 255.255.255.0. Your iSCSI network could be 192.168.2.0 with same subnet mask, or you could do IPs from another non routable range like 10.x.x.x. You might want to read up on ip addressin...

Re: dedup file growth

Surely this would have to be run with the target offline? If you have spare disk space, especially on different set of spindles, it would make more sense to me to create a new de-dupe target and then copy the data across from the initiator side. How you do this would depend on the application, but y...

Re: Starwind Thin Provisioning

Hi Kevin, A deduplicated target is inherently thin provisioned, even if the engine is doing it differently - it will only consume the disk space necessary for the deduplicated data, rather than the full size of the target you specify at creation. The iSCSI clients will not know that the (say) 1TB th...

Re: StarWind Service / Remote Sharing

I had to look up Alcohol 120% as it sounded like a drink! A CD/DVD burning app, with Starwind built in to share drives over the network. Randomperson : starwind cannot be used to compromise your anti-piracy measures in the way you describe. Your customer probably wants to share his drive with other ...

Re: StarWind V5.8 Beta

I was just looking for a reason for the lower write performance... I can see how the ack from 2nd server's cache would cause a delay - and I will look to see if I have a bottleneck in the sync channel as well. I have yet to unleash my storage-killer tests, but I think that my immediate impression is...

Re: StarWind V5.8 Beta

With HA targets, I know you say you need to optimise performance. I'm consistently getting lower write speed than read speed - is WB cache disabled, so if you set cache as WB currently, you actually get WT cache? I think WT cache MUST be working as I still get better speeds in an ATTO test than the ...

Re: StarWind V5.8 Beta

MS iSCSI transport for sync channel has been substituted by new transport implementation.
Is the MS iSCSI service still used for other functions, as the installer checks for it and won't proceed until it's running.

cheers,

Re: Version 5.8 Download for Dedupe Beta Testing???

Hi Bohdan, I'm not frustrated at all - sorry if I gave that impression! I appreciate what a big effort 5.8 must be and if you've got known issues that you want to fix before the beta, then it's entirely right that it should be delayed. We're here find anything you may have missed! HA dedupe (with th...

Re: Version 5.8 Download for Dedupe Beta Testing???

Hi,

Is the 5.8 going to hit beta this month (November) or is it more likely next month / 2012?

With all the deduplication stuff and other under the hood changes I imagine you will probably want as big a beta as possible!

cheers,

(possibly stupid) dedupe question

Another thread here about DPM/VSS support - http://www.starwindsoftware.com/forums/starwind-f5/dpm-backup-cluster-shared-volumes-starwind-vss-provider-t2313.html made me think of a client I have and their backups... Current situation: they run a hyper-v server, with a couple of Windows VMs (includin...

Re: DPM Backup of Cluster Shared Volumes Starwind VSS Provider

My experience of DPM is the version prior to 2010 (2007 IIRC), but I've got a lot experience of Starwind, and Hyper-V clustering with CSV storage, and in my experience, you are generally better off with guest based backup rather than host based backups, unless you are happy losing some of the advant...
