Re: HA with CSV, iSCSI and Live Migration networks

Let's go from the opposite side: What's your IOPS requirement? What's the number of VMs you want to be able to migrate or run in the redirected mode? 1 10 GbE can handle ~250K IOPS. This means that 2 ports configured as sync and iSCSI on 2 different NICs will give you a max of 250K/2 IOPS capability...

Re: HA with CSV, iSCSI and Live Migration networks

Some recommendations: 1. I would suggest to remove the synchronization interface from the live migration subnet. 2. Make sure your Heartbeat is not on the domain interface. Best practice is to keep the heartbeat segregated into a dedicated VLAN and subnet. StarWind uses all available channels bandwi...

Re: HA with CSV, iSCSI and Live Migration networks

It is recommended to use MPIO instead of teaming with StarWind Virtual SAN V8 on all links used for synchronization or iSCSI client traffic.
For all other links in the system I recommend to follow Microsoft best practices.
Please feel free to contact me should you have any questions.

Re: Unable to delete files of a removed device

Hi, Usually service restart isn't required and the files can be removed right away. However, the files can remain locked for some time while StarWind is flushing their cache to the disk in the background mode. If you're restarting the service the VMs, running on the StarWind devices have to be turne...

Re: Second node sync Error

Hi,
To understand the issues better I need more information about the system:
1. Storage network diagram
2. StarWind version and build number
3. Underlying OS on StarWind servers
4. Symptoms of the issue, preceding events
5. License type used

Re: HA with CSV, iSCSI and Live Migration networks

Hi,
Technically you can put the live migration traffic in a VLAN along with the iSCSI network.
Make sure you have enough throughput to handle both VM traffic and live migration traffic, even considering that 2x10GbE is capable of ~0.5 million IOPS.

Re: ESXi 5.5U2 Can't connect to Target

Hi! What is the type of free license you use? Could you please provide us with an iSCSI network diagram? Also, please make sure Microsoft iSCSI target service is disabled and not blocking port 3260, even though you uninstalled it. BTW: if you see the device and paths that usually means you're alread...

Re: ESX Slow Connection to Starwinds

Hi! To get to the bottom of the issue we need to see how everything is wired in the configuration. 1. Network diagram of the iSCSI environment 2. VMware vSwitch & vmkernel configuration 3. Dynamic and static discovery addresses list on vSphere hosts. Also, long rescan often happens if there are ...

Re: Can I mount virtual drives directly on Windows 2012R2?

Hi! Sounds like something else got access to port 3260. Could you please check if there is any software on the machine using that port? First suspect is Microsoft iSCSI Target Other suspects look like software SANs :) best way to start is running netstat -anob (don't forget to run it with Admin righ...

Re: SSD L2 Writeback Cache Question

Hi! I'm not sure that's a necessary measure. In case of a power outage you're still dealing with application failures caused by sudden blackout. So adding an extra layer of protection to just storage doesn't justify itself. As for the IOPS, using SSD for write-back doesn't eliminate the bottleneck o...

Re: Problems with 2012 R2 Storage Spaces

Combining lasagna and storage spaces should've helped. You only need to know how to bake the SATA port between the pasta slices properly. Jokes aside: I assume you're running the latest version. A few questions to understand the configuration better. 1. What are the img sizes? 2. Did you try to crea...

Unless you're doing a direct RAID volume pass through you're not putting big writes on the disks.

Re: Virtual SAN V8 craches with 3ware controller (?)

StarWind works over NTFS so I guess it comes down to the size specified when creating the partition.
I'm looking into the logs Joerg sent few days ago to see if there are any leads to the issue.

Re: iSCSI 127.0.0.1 not connected first on host reboot

Just did a quick search and it looks like there is no direct way to manage the active session through PowerShell. As a workaround, I'll offer to do a script with the following logics: 127.0.0.1 target reconnecting triggers a disconnect of the partner target and then its reconnect. But I would also c...
