Complete HA creation with StarwindX

I created a NON HA target with StarwindX and now I want to know if i can turn that NON HA target into an two node HA target with StarwindX without losing its data? I've looked at the example of creating an HA target with StarwindX, but that assumes that I want to create both nodes at once and clear ...

I am decommissioning some older storage servers and bringing online some new ones. The old storages servers have: Supermicro X8ST3 motherboard Intel i7 CPU X 990 @ 3.47GHz Intel X520-DA2 Dual 10Gb NIC LSI MegaRAID SAS 9265‐8i RAID Controller 24 600GB 15K SAS2 Seagate Cheetahs 100GB C: drive (Server ...

Re: VM Storage VMotion

Okay, so here's the issue. The datastores in question are non-HA. So there's no synchronization involved. I can normally migrate a VM (storage or host) and the end user is unaware of it. But, when I migrated a VM between two datastores on the same storage server the VM in question became unresponsiv...

VM Storage VMotion

I think I know the answer to this, I just want to have someone verify it. If I have two storage servers and I storage vMotion a VMWare VM from one datastore on storage server A to different datastore on storage server B, during the migration I can see some 6 gigabit worth of network traffic between ...

Advanced iSCSI Settings

Let me start with my question: Why have the values in Advanced Settings for iSCSI been limited? How are valid values determined? Here's the back story... I've started testing V8 and I'm a little confused by the iSCSI section of the Advanced Settings. When I started using v5 then on into v6 I ended u...

Re: Deduplication in v8 - now recommended to store VMware VMFS?

I think I`ll better explain how it works That's what I was afraid of... So can you explain to me why you would ever trust DeDup in a production environment? If I had a DeDuped iSCSI volume that was holding a dozen windows 7 VMs that where all but identical (a computer lab for example). Even though ...

Re: Deduplication in v8 - now recommended to store VMware VMFS?

With the rewrite of Dedup and all the other advances in v8, will VMware know it is writing to a dedup volume? If you have a 1000 gig VMware volume and write 500 gigs of data, then dedup gets you down to 250 gig of actual data on the datastore, the problem in the past has been VMware thinking you hav...

Re: Advice on maximizing the speed that vSphere can clone VMs

1) In this case you can throw faster spindles into storage node (sorry, pretty much obvious). These are SSDs (15 @ raid 6 + 1 hot spare) 2) Yes, LUNs should be the same. I don't think anybody does target-to-target VAAI (at least I'm not aware of such an implementations). Is it anything you need? I m...

Re: Advice on maximizing the speed that vSphere can clone VMs

1) With HA configs

This particular iSCSI node is not HA.

2) We are working on VAAI

If I understand it right, in the case of cloning a VM, it would only help if the source VM was on the same iSCSI target as the destination VM. right?

Advice on maximizing the speed that vSphere can clone VMs

I asked this over on the VMware Communities forums and I'm not getting a lot of useful help, so I thought I'd ask it over here too. I have a cluster of VMware Hosts that have dual 10Gig NICs. I'm using Starwind 6.0.5713 as my iSCSI storage solution with dual 10gig nics. I'm doing iSCSI port binding ...

Properly Rebooting a Datastore

I'm in a WMware environment and a couple time a year I patch my datastores (put in windows patches, update Starwind, update RAID card firmware/drivers, update NIC Drivers, etc). So I'm wondering what is the proper procedure for do this? Here's what happened last time: [This was on a NON HA datastore...

Deduplication Performance

I just installed Starwind 6.0.5189. I wanted to start testing Deduplication so I created a DDup disk. This test is being done on a 10 gigabit network infrastructure. From inside of VMware, I migrated a VM from a non DDup iSCSI target to my DDup target I just created. I'm seeing network speeds just u...

Re: Avoid full sync after servers location move

For what it's worth, it would be a really nice option to be able to manually shut down an HA device until manually turned back on. A couple times a year I want to bring down all my VMs, VMWare Hosts, and Starwind iSCSI datastores for patches and upgrades. It would be nice to be able click on the HA ...

Read Cache

I have a question:

If I create a Deduplicated Disk with 2 gigs of write-back cache. Does Starwind use any of that 2 gigs as read cache or is it just write cache?

VMWare not failing back to preferred path

I don't think this is a Starwind problem but I'd thought I'd ask it here first. I have my two iSCSI datastores running Starwind in HA mode. Each datastore has a dual 10gig nic in it. Each NIC port has it's own IP. So I have 4 paths to each HA target. I have, on purpose, set my VMware hosts to a fixe...
