StarWind Virtual Tape Library (VTL) is an appliance that eliminates the need in physical tape by emulating industry-standard tape hardware, keeping all data on inexpensive, fast and high-capacity spinning disks. It is designed for SMB and Enterprises, who either look to get rid of backup tapes completely, or are willing to accelerate backup process and add an extra level of protection. Even with explosive data growth, StarWind VTL fits the backup into backup window by accelerating it, so the process does not overlap with production time. Optionally, it creates additional copy of backup data on the intermediate HDD for better safety. It is also available in a software-only form, as part of StarWind VSAN functionality.
Servers: Dell PowerEdge provided by StarWind premier hardware partners.
OS: Windows Server 2012 R2 Windows Server 2012 R2 delivers global-scale cloud services into the infrastructure with features and enhancements in virtualization, management, storage, networking, virtual desktop infrastructure, access and information protection, and the web and application platform.
Virtual Shared Storage: StarWind Virtual SAN® V8 StarWind Virtual SAN is entirely software-based, hypervisor-centric VM storage which “mirrors” disks and flash between the servers running virtualization workload. It eliminates the need for any physical shared storage and seamlessly integrates into a hypervisor for unbeatable performance.
StarWind Virtual Tape Library is a full-fledged hardware appliance that converts the inexpensive, high capacity SATA drives into virtual tapes, emulating real tape hardware.
Backup is significantly accelerated because VTL is utilizing RAM and flash caching, which makes it faster and much more agile in comparison to traditional physical tapes. The risk of backup process overlapping with the production time is eliminated. In other words, there won’t be any performance degradation due to unfinished backup, because the process takes less time and fits the designated backup window. Should regulatory requirements still demand a physical tape backup, D2D2T Strategy can be implemented to offload backups from StarWind VTL to any existing physical tape library.
StarWind VTL comes in three models: small (S), large (L) and extra-large (XL). Each one is designed store different amounts of data. As the amount of data grows, VTL capacity can be increased by adding new ready-nodes.
StarWind VTL is also available in a “software-only” version, as a plugin for StarWind Virtual SAN. It is designed to run on the existing set of hardware.
