Key points of the webinar:

  • StarWind Cloud VTL for AWS and Veeam adds cloud storage tier to the backup infrastructure
  • Reasons to use StarWind Cloud VTL for AWS and Veeam
  • Ensuring protection against ransomware attacks with StarWind Cloud VTL for AWS and Veeam
  • Demonstrating how to restore a virtual machine from the VTL backup in Amazon S3

StarWind Cloud VTL for AWS and Veeam is a backup storage solution which ultimately adds the cloud storage tier to the backup infrastructure, ensuring compliance with 3-2-1 backup rule. It further provides an effortless integration of the cost-efficient “cold” object storage without the need for installing several third-party software components.

StarWind Cloud VTL has been designed specifically for Amazon Web Services (AWS) and Veeam to reduce backup costs, accelerate the backup process speed and provide an additional level of data protection. It eliminates the need for physical tapes and delivers automatic replication and tiering to AWS along with smart data de-staging from S3 to Glacier cloud storage. The process is fully automated and the only thing that needs to be done is to configure retention policies and the most rarely used data will be sent to Glacier.

There are several reasons to use StarWind Cloud VTL. First, it provides reliable data protection since ransomware doesn’t talk tape. The VTL file format is seen by ransomware as a physical tape which it can’t access by design and thus, can’t be encrypted.

Furthermore, virtual tapes use space more efficiently, allowing to customize their size. Another benefit is that StarWind Cloud VTL provides compliance with 3-2-1-0 backup rule, which means that there are three copies of data on two different types of media, one on the off-site location and zero errors during restores.

StarWind Cloud VTL ensures a high level of security since no user access to AWS is needed to move the tapes. Additionally, tapes cannot be attacked, especially in the cloud. Malware can’t easily get access to tape backups in Amazon Glacier, and even if it learns how to do it, the speed of Glacier becomes an advantage since all the connections with it can be easily abandoned and data will remain secure.

The video further demonstrates the process of restoring a virtual machine from the VTL backup in Amazon S3 and shows how to perform the replication of data to Amazon S3 cloud storage.
