Hardware iSCSI Initiator - Host Bus Adapter

Generally speaking, an iSCSI Host Bus Adapter or an iSCSI HBA is a hardware initiator for PCs. More precisely, it is a circuit board or integrated circuit adapter that performs input/output (I/O) processing and connects storage to a PC over Ethernet. It provides fast and easy transfer of data from a client PC to a server.

iSCSI provides a block-level access to storage. It means that existing productive WAN and LAN can be used to connect any workstation or server to storage which will be displayed as if locally attached.

iSCSI HBA offers the following important advantages:
  • Within any network, it permits all PCs to transfer information to any centralized storage unit
  • Provides faster information transfer speeds, lower maintenance demands, and better security than software iSCSI initiators
  • Performs many low-level interface operations minimally affecting a host processor
  • Reduces costs by means of flexible integration of a hardware platform with a SAN
  • Ensures ease of storage management operations with a common interface

Among the most important HBA disadvantages it must be mentioned that every computer network using the iSCSI protocol should have an HBA. There is no need for every PC within a network to be equipped with its own HBA, but still one HBA is not enough to guarantee smooth operation of a large network.
