There's no such thing as "simple thin provisioning". You also get snapshots with it (in case of near-CDP) and deduplication. Dedupe is not in beta BTW. We'll consider opportunity to implement "TP only" volumes however.

kevin@nextvault.com wrote:Since Dedupe appears to still be beta, I'm confused how to setup Thin provisioning in production.
I see it available under the CDP setting, but don't see how to just setup a simple, thin provisioned image. I don't need any special features on it, just thin provision so it grows as it needs to, like you have described and we have seen in the dedupe mode.

Thanks

Thanks for the prompt feedback.
I will give the CDP/TP version another try.

On my server which I just installed Starwind 2 weeks ago, when selecting Advanced Virtual, the next screen shows Deduplicated Disk Device, along with other options. Next to Deduplicated Disk Device is a big star. Looking at the bottom of the screen the star indicates "Items marked with (star) are experimental. Use at your own risk"

So I am confused about this statement and yours. Please advise. Thanks

"Experimental" does not mean "beta". VMware has half of their features marked "experimental".

Also with release 5.8 we'll remove all "stars".
