Can't connect to StarWind Server through Management Console

Postby scottpriddy » Mon Oct 04, 2010 11:39 am

Hi there,

Hope someone can help. We've had StarWind installed on a server and up and running for a couple of months in a test environment. Everything has been fine. Last weekend the equipment went into production which involved changing the LAN IPs of all the servers. The private iSCSI LAN was unchanged.

Since the IP change and DNS record updates, I am unable to connect to the iSCSI server through the management console. I try to connect from the console running directly on the StarWind server or across the network from another host. I get the following error message:

StarWind Service not found on host - LTS-SAN01.HVADMIN.LOCAL (192.168.172.204) : 3261

The hostname and IP address are correct. There is no firewall running on this server so I know that isn't the problem. DNS resolution is fine.

The iSCSI server service is running and clients are connecting to it all ok, I just can't connect through the management console to check the status of the iSCSI service.

Any help will be greatly appreciated.

Many thanks,

Scott.

Update:

If I try to add a host in the network discovery and enter the IP range that the server is in, it doesn't detect a StarWind server. I try it's LAN IP - 192.168.172.204 or 127.0.0.1 still the same - no dice.

Hello,
Try to open the 3260 and 3261 ports in the firewall.
Additionally you can re-add the host manually typing in it's IP address on the same network with the server you are connecting from.

As I said in the original post there is no firewall running on the server. It is disabled through Group Policy. So I am mystified why I can't connect to it.

1. Can you connect with telnet to it?
2. Are you from US or other part of the world? :)

Hi Constantin,

I am in the UK. I've emailed you today regarding the StarWind service stopping on the same server. Can you look at both issues?

Many thanks,

Scott.

I can telnet to port 3260 and get a blank screen indicating it is accepting the connection. However it fails to connect on 3261.

That`s the reason why you can`t connect to service! something blocks incoming connection.

Update: This is has bee resolved. I found in the starwind.cfg file that the service was bound to listen only on a specific IP address and not 0.0.0.0 (which is any). This is a multi-homed server with NICs set up for iSCSI that I didn't want management traffic going down.

The server was moved to another network and its public (management) IP was changed therefore the IP in the configuration file was now no longer valid. I manually changed it to the correct IP address of the server and restarted the StarWind service. All is right again and can now connect to the service through the management console.
